Meet on medicinal plants begins

An international conference on medicinal plants and drug discovery hosted by V Shivram Research Foundation and Society for Conservation and Resource Development of Medicinal Plants began in the city on Wednesday.

Dr N R Shetty, Chancellor of the Central University of Karnataka said, "According to the World Health Organisation, 70% of medicinal herbs form the base of the of pharmaceutical products and most of them produce chemical compounds that are useful to mankind."

Dr K R Venugopal, Vice Chancellor, Bangalore University, explained how the natural, local medicinal herbs are an essential part of everyday life to an Indian and how they have been proven to cure many diseases.
