About 85% of an estimated 3.23 crore registered stock market investors in India are men, and there is a need to educate more women about markets, said experts at a conference held here on Friday.
Over 100 women participated in the conference for women investors, organised by Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India (MSE) in association with Engendered, a cause marketing ecosystem to support women.
"This is the first time that a conference being held for women exclusively, and we are planning to take this forward across the country," said P K Ramesh, Chief Regulatory Affairs, MSE, highlighting the need to motive women to engage in the stock market.
MSE has taken the initiative 'Share-The-Market' to educate women population and induct them to the world of capital market investing. "MSE with the support of Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is looking forward to many similar programmes to empower women investors," Ramesh said.
From the basics of finance to the role of regulator Sebi and the difference between saving and investment, the workshop had various sessions.
"MSE aims to reach out to two lakh women in Karnataka on financial literacy. Through WhatsApp and websites, we will help women understand the basics of stock markets, mutual funds, SIP and so on," said Jayesh Shinde, Head-Communications and CSR, MSE.
