Mumbai: As the festival of democracy continued, a 111-year-old woman exercised her franchise in the Naxalite-infested Gadchiroli district in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.
The grandmother, Fulmati Binod Sarkar is a resident of Govindpur in Mulchera taluka. Fulmati was born on January 1, 1913.
Since she is unable to walk, the administration had arranged a four-wheeler and a wheelchair.
Fulmati also appealed to people to vote and do their duty.
“The grandmother created enthusiasm among the voters by voting in person. The grandmother's enthusiasm for voting was commendable. While this enthusiasm of the 111-year-old grandmother was exemplary for the young class who are turning their backs on voting,” Gadchiroli district officials said.
The Election Commission of India has ensured home voting facilities for voters above 85 years of age, however Fulmati preferred to come to the booth and vote.
“It is a matter of pride for this 111-year-old grandmother to participate in the celebration of democracy by voting in person. She refused to vote at home and participated in the celebration of democracy in person. Not only that, but she also appealed to everyone to vote in her native Bengali language,” official said.
