Mumbai: Dynasty politics continues in Maharashtra as members and descendants of several political families enter the new Vidhan Sabha.
There are several examples within the BJP-led Maha Yuti who have made it to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
However, several gen-next politicians - particularly from the Maha Vikas Aghadi lost the polls.
The Pawar family of Baramati in Pune district now has the maximum number of lawmakers.
The family patriarch and NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar is a Rajya Sabha member while his daughter and NCP (SP) Working President Supriya Sule is the Baramati MP.
Pawar’s nephew Ajit Pawar, who is the NCP President was elected from the Baramati as an MLA for the eighth time defeating his nephew Yugendra Pawar, who was pitted by NCP (SP). Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar, who was defeated by Supriya Sule in general elections, is now a Rajya Sabha member.
Pawar’s grand-nephew Rohit Pawar managed to retain his seat of Karjat-Jamkhed from Ahilyanagar district (earlier Ahmednagar).
From Tuljapur in Dharashiv district (earlier Osmanabad), Ranajagjitsinha Patil was elected from the BJP. He is the son of Padmasinh Patil, the brother of Sunetra Pawar.
From the Konkan belt, former Maharashtra Chief Minister and ex-Leader of Opposition Narayan Rane’s two sons - Nilesh Rane and Nitesh Rane entered the House from different parties.
Rane is a BJP Lok Sabha member from the Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg seat of Maharashtra.
While Nilesh, a former MP, was elected from Kudal on a ticket from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, his younger brother Nitesh Rane of BJP was elected from the Kankavli seat for the third time. Both these seats are in Sindhudurg. Thus the Rane family now has three lawmakers.
In Ratnagiri district, Shinde’s close aide Uday Samant won the polls from the Ratnagiri seat while his brother Kiran Sawant won the Rajapur seat.
Former BJP Jalna MP and ex-union minister Raosaheb Patil’s two children won the elections - while son Santosh Danve won the Bhokardan seat for the third time for BJP his daughter Sanjana Jadhav won the Kannad seat for Shiv Sena defeating her estranged husband Harshawardhan Jadhav.
Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Chavan’s daughter Shreejaya Chavan won the Bhokar seat in Nanded. Her mother Ameeta Chavan and grandfather and former Chief Minister and ex-union minister Shankarrao Chavan too had represented the seat earlier.
Mumbai Congress President and Mumbai North Central MP Prof Varsha Gaikwad’s sister Dr Jyoti Gaikwad won the Dharavi seat in Mumbai. Their father late Eknath Gaikwad was an ex-MLA and ex-MP.
Former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh’s son Amit Deshmukh won the Latur City seat for the fourth time defeating BJP’s Dr Archana Patil, the daughter-in-law of former Lok Sabha Speaker and Congress stalwart Shivraj Patil-Chakurkar. Amit’s brother Dhiraj, however, lost the Latur Rural seat.
In Mumbai, former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) head Uddhav Thackeray’s son Aaditya Thackeray managed to retain the Worli seat. His maternal cousin Varun Sardesai won the Bandra East seat. Aaditya’s cousin Amit Thackeray, the son of MNS President Raj Thackeray, however, lost the polls from Mahim.
Shiv Sena Aurangabad MP Sandipan Bhumare’s son Vilas Bhumare won the Paithan seat.
Former state Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil’s son Rohit Patil won the elections for NCP (SP) from Tasgaon-Kavathe Mahankal.

Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls took place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP went up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress tried to make their mark.
