Sanju, the biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt, which was released last week, is headed for a blockbuster status.

Having earned a staggering Rs 34.75 crore at the box office on its first day, Sanju is ahead of Salman Khan-starrer Race 3 to become the highest opener of the year so far.

Sanju has also become the seventh film to enter the Rs 100-crore club this year after Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus Padmaavat, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Raid, Baaghi 2, Raazi and Race 3.

Sanju is directed by Rajkumar Hirani and written by him along with Abhijat Joshi. It was jointly produced by Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra under the banners Rajkumar Hirani Films and Vinod Chopra Films respectively.

The film follows the life of Munna Bhai actor, his relationship with his father, his descent into alcoholism and drug addiction, arrest for involvement in the 1993 Bombay bombings, comeback in the film industry, and eventual release after completing his jail term.

Ranbir starred along with an ensemble cast of Paresh Rawal, Vicky Kaushal, Manisha Koirala, Dia Mirza, Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Jim Sarbh.
