The Mumbai police has booked champion wrestler Narsingh Yadav, an officer of the rank of assistant commissioner of police, for allegedly campaigning for Congress candidate Sanjay Nirupam.
The Amboli police station has registered an FIR against him after he was found campaigning for Nirupam, who is contesting from Mumbai North West - and is pitting against sitting Shiv Sena MP Gajanan Kirtikar.
On Sunday night, Yadav had campaigned for Nirupam in Yadavnagar in Andheri-West.
The FIR was registered under sections 129 (2) (Officers, etc., at elections not to act for candidates or to influence voting) of the Representation of People’s Act against Yadav.
A departmental inquiry will also be initiated against Yadav, police sources said.
At the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Yadav had won the gold medal in the men's freestyle 74 kg category. Later, however, he found himself embroiled in a doping scandal and was barred from the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
