Founding member of Delhi LGBT Pride, Mohnish Malhotra, slammed the Bar Council of India (BCI) over its resolution opposing the grant of legal recognition to same-sex marriage in the country. In a self-made video, Mohnish Malhotra said that the BCI’s decision shows the hypocrisy that the LGBTIQA+ community has faced for years.
“This resolution does nothing but expose the hypocrisy that we have faced and dealt with for years," Malhotra said.
"Last time, the argument in the Supreme Court was that we are a minuscule minority, and that itself explains the verdict that the majority cannot exclude a minority or a small community based on what they have decided is the right thing to do,” he added.
“As citizens of India, we all deserve the basic fundamental rights, regardless of what community we belong to. The LGBT community in India has come a long way, and we have utmost trust and faith in the Supreme Court that they will consider how this impacts the future of our generation and generations to come,” he further said.
On April 23, the Bar Council of India (BCI) passed a resolution opposing the grant of legal recognition to same-sex marriage in the country.
