Panaji: The two-month-long fishing ban began in Goa on Saturday, with most trawlers returning to their respective jetties by midnight, State Fisheries Minister Nilkant Halarnkar said on Saturday.
Talking to PTI, Halarnkar said fishing with mechanised vessels is not permitted till July 31.
The ban has been imposed ahead of the monsoon season to allow breeding of fish in the sea, he said.
As many as 800 trawlers registered with the state fisheries department are operating from jetties, including at Cutbona, Vasco (in South Goa), Malim and Caisuva (North Goa), and two small jetties at Cortalim and Talpona (South Goa), he said.
The minister said a strict vigil will be kept at all jetties to ensure no trawler violates the ban.
