Anil Methaniya, a resident of Jesda village in Surendranagar district, was first year student of GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Dharpur, Patan, about 125 km from Ahmedabad. He was allegedly made to stand for three-and-a-half-hour during ragging by his seniors.

The FIR was filed on the basis of a written complaint of Anil Bhatija, additional dean of GMERS following a report submitted by an anti-ragging committee. The FIR states that third-year students at the hostel made Methaniya and several other first year students stand for nearly three-and-a-half-hour during an "introduction".

The FIR states that the students had assembled in a common room in the B-block of boys hostel. The seniors made the first year students sing songs, dance, were abused and confined in the room for three hours.

The FIR says that Anil Methaniya collapsed and fell unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital where he died. The anti-ragging committee found involvement of 15 students of second year who were suspended.

The 15 students named in the FIR have been identified as Avdhesh Patel, Hiren Prajapati, Tushar Gohelkar, Prakash Desai, Jaimin Chaudhary, Praveen Chaudhary, Vivek Rabari, Rutvik Limbadiya, Mehul Dedhatar, Surjal Baldaniya, Haresh Chavda, Vaibhavkumar Raval, Parag Kalsariya, Utpal Vasava, and Vishal Chaudhary.

The anti-ragging committee recorded 26 statements out of 11 students of first year named 15 of their seniors.
