Mysuru: The Union Ministry for Tribal Affairs has identified 1,089 villages across Karnataka, for its Pradhan Mantri's Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan (mission) (PMJUGA), to transform tribal villages into model villages, so as to enable the villagers to develop their potential for a meaningful contribution to the economy and society.

The Tribal Welfare department is all set to implement 25 programmes of various departments in 62 tribal hamlets of HD Kote, Saragur, Hunsur, Mysuru, Periyapatna, Nanjangud and T Narsipur taluks, under the first phase of PMJUGA.

The objective of PMJUGA is to provide pucca houses to eligible families, improving village infrastructure, promotion of economic empowerment, universalisation of access to good education and healthy lives, with dignified ageing.

The villages, with at least 500 ST persons and 50% of ST population, have been identified for the scheme for five years. The objectives of the mission is to develop and enable infrastructure, promotion of economic empowerment, universalisation of access to good education, healthy life and dignified ageing. The funds, available under PMAAGY will be utilised for dedicated interventions like infrastructure development of Ashram and Tribal schools, sickle cell disease, to provide marketplace and others, according to officials.

The 1,089 villages in Karnataka, under PMJUGA, will cover 8.05 lakh ST beneficiaries in 28 districts, under 129 blocks.

Seventeen ministries, including Ministry of Tribal Affairs, would be deployed for the purpose, which would analyse the number of kuccha houses, villages not connected with pucca road, villages not having tap water supply, without electricity, health facility within a distance of 10 km or 5 km, houses without LPG connection, not having schools within five kilometre, not having telephone connectivity, not having market in 5-km range and others.

Raichur highest

The highest number of 243 villages have been identified in Raichur district of Karnataka, under PMJUGY, while Kodagu district is the least, with just one village.

Bidar with 196 villages, Chitradurga with 87 villages, Yadgir with 64 and Mysuru with 62 villages are the other districts in the first five places.

The 62 villages in Mysuru district include, 14 villages of HD Kote, nine in Saragur, 14 in Hunsur, six in Mysuru, three in Periyapatna, 10 in Nanjangud and six in T Narsipur taluk.

According to the Tribal Welfare Officer Mallesh, the list was announced on October 2. A survey work will be taken up, to prepare a detailed project report to be submitted to the government, soon.

Mysuru ZP CEO K M Gayathri said that 62 villages of Mysuru district have been identified. "The district and taluk-level monitoring committee should be formed. Works would be started once the guidelines are available," she added.
