The organs of a man, who was declared brain dead following grievous head injuries in a road accident, were donated on Wednesday.
Sudeep Poojary had suffered severe injuries in a road accident that occurred on May 27 at Brahmavar, and was admitted to Kasturba Hospital in Manipal. The doctors declared him brain dead at 9.15 pm on May 28, under the 1994 Protocols and procedures of the 1994 Human Rights Act.
Subsequently, Poojary's elder brothers, Sandeep Poojary and Pradeep Poojary expressed their willingness to donate viable organs. Two corneas, two kidneys, liver, pancreas, heart and lungs were harvested and helped to save the lives of eight people.
As per Jeevasarthakathe (previous ZCCK) protocols and decisions, two corneas and two kidneys were retained by Kasturba Hospital Manipal for the registered patients while the liver and pancreas were sent to patients of BGS Hospital, Bengaluru, and Heart valve and lungs to the patients of BGS Hospital, Chennai.
The harvested organs were sent to Bengaluru on Wednesday morning with the support of the Udupi polic who created a green corridor from Manipal to Mangaluru International Airport.
Sandeep Poojary and Pradeep Poojary, the elder brothers of the deceased Sudeep Poojary, said, “Organ donation is a noble cause and our brother has committed a great deed even in his death."
Medical Superintendent Dr Avinash Shetty said, "The organ donation is a great work to save lives, and people should encourage such good things," he added.
