Having tried to make the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike fix various civic issues, residents of Bellandur ward have approached the police to probe the lack of accountability.
They have appealed to the Bellandur sub-inspector to review the matter and investigate “the entire lack of accountability” as they suspect a larger conspiracy involving the BBMP and all its contractors and stakeholders who are willfully endangering public safety.
“We had highlighted safety issues related to roads and asked for TenderSURE roads during the ward committee meetings and submitted a letter to the BBMP commissioner. Besides these, there are hundreds of complaints on road safety issues, but there’s complete apathy by the BBMP in Bellandur, which is the highest revenue generator in the Mahadevapura zone,” said Vishnu Prasad, member of the Kasavanahalli Development Forum.
He said more than 200 km of road network in the ward is damaged, resulting in accidents.
Bellandur’s roads turned even more pathetic due to the recent spell of rain. Some of the roads that are damaged include Halanayakanahalli road, Junnasandra road, Kasavanahalli main road, Haralur road, Janatha Colony, Sarjapur road, Bellandur main road and others. In their petition, the residents also included the number of accidents in the respective roads and the number of fatalities.
What the cops say
Sub-inspector Ganapathy said: “We have received complaints from road accident victims against owners of vehicles and not against the BBMP or the officials concerned at the time of the accident. Had it been a complaint against the BBMP commissioner, it could have been treated as a complaint, against which we would have taken action. But now, this is treated as a petition. We’ll make sure it reaches the BBMP commissioner through our higher authorities.”
