Traffic police rerouted vehicles onto the main carriageway. Police sources said the incident was caused by heavy rain on Wednesday night, combined with ongoing metro pillar construction.

"The road caved in near the metro work at Karthik Nagar. Traffic policemen stationed there noticed the issue and informed metro officials," said MN Anucheth, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

No injuries were reported, and the collapse created a small hole, no larger than one foot in diameter, with cracks extending in both directions. The area was cordoned off with plastic cones, and Namma Metro engineers repaired the damage.

A senior BMRCL official in charge of the Silk Board Junction-KR Pura metro line (Phase 2A) said a portion of the soil collapsed right to the excavation site.

"It wasn't a sinkhole. There was a small cavity because the excavation was a bit deeper. It was filled subsequently," the official told DH.

Sinkhole in Shantinagar

In a related incident, a large sinkhole appeared on the Shantinagar Double Road.

Since the road was recently asphalted, BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath stated that he had sought a technical report on the damage. "If the road caved in due to poor workmanship, we would take appropriate action against the responsible engineer," he added.
