Bengaluru: The death toll has risen to five, a day after a seven-storied under-construction residential building collapsed in eastern Bengaluru on Tuesday following heavy rains.

Senior fire and emergency services officers confirmed to DH that as of 8:30 am on Wednesday, five recovered were declared dead and 16 were rescued, taking the total number of victims to 21.

“Fourteen people managed to come out from the debris and escape when the building collapsed and four others were rescued by fire and other emergency personnel,” a senior firefighter told DH.

The deceased were identified as Arman, 26, Tripal, 35, and Mohamed Sahil, 19, all from Bihar, and Sathya Raju, 25, and a fifth victim named Shankar, whose age wasn't clear at the moment. Police said Jagadevi, 45, Rasheed, 28, Nagaraju, 25, Ramesh Kumar, 28, Arman 22, and Ayaz, were being treated at the hospital.

The building in Anjanadri Layout under Hennur police station limits collapsed around 3.40 pm. Fire and Emergency Services sources confirmed said that the control room was alerted at 4.10 pm. Three fire tenders were dispatched.

“It was a G+6 building built on a 40x60 site,” a senior fire officer said.
