While citizens and authorities battled the polluted Bellandur and Varthur Lakes contaminating waterbodies in Kolar, a class 9 student of the district decided to take the matter in his own hands.

Shivashankar has come up with a solution to purify the water naturally. He presented the solution at the state-level youth scientists’ convention 2017-18 organised by the Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat in the city, where young students from across Karnataka presented their innovations.

“I decided to find a solution naturally for the frothing, and conducted a research on the chemicals present in the Bellandur Lake by visiting the treatment plants in Bengaluru. After various tests, I have come up with this model that purifies the contaminated water naturally,” said Shivashankar.

Explaining his solution step by step, Shivashankar said: “Initially, the anaerobic bacteria should be added to the contaminated water to help in getting rid of the waste particles. In the next step, we can detect the deadly bacteria through the fixed film reactor. To stop the multiplication of waste particles, the powder of banana’s skin should be sprinkled into the flowing water. In the last stage, a corncob will help in the removal of the metal content from the water.”

Providing artificial hands for patients suffering from essential tremor was another innovation presented by a student from Bengaluru. Models showcasing the solution for traffic problems and methods to make concrete land absorb the rain water were some other innovations presented by the students.

P C Jaffer, commissioner, department of public instruction, inaugurated the event. The Karnataka Science Centre had received 188 applications across the state, out of which 102 students are participating in the event.
