Contributing to the larger movement of making the city roads friendly for cyclists, residents of Sanjaynagar plan to restrict motor vehicles to designated hours on certain days of every month.

The residents, along with members of Citizens For Sustainability (CiFoS), an NGO, will propose to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Bangalore Traffic Police (BTP) to introduce ‘Living Street’. The street will give preference to cyclists and walkers, over other vehicles, between 7.30 am and 10.00 am on the first Sunday of every month. A traffic-calmed zone is expected with low driving speed limits on such days.

This is the second such initiative undertaken by the residents to promote cycling.

In February, they had started a cycle rental service in the locality with 250 cycle stands, where the services were provided by Zoomcar. Under this, users can borrow cycles through the Zoomcar app and pay a minimal rent on an hourly basis.

“We have received tremendous response from the local residents here for our first initiative. This has encouraged us to promote cycling further. It is a common sight nowadays to see people opting for cycles for short-distance commute in the locality,” said Vignan Gowda, a resident.

He said they will make a proposal to the civic agencies seeking officials’ cooperation for the initiative. “Our initiative will not restrict other vehicles from commuting on the road because it is not possible in a city like Bengaluru,” said Gowda.
