A 17-year-old pedestrian was killed on the spot when he was knocked down by a speeding BMW car driven by a surgeon who was in an inebriated state on Old Airport Road near Domlur flyover in the early hours on Monday.
The deceased, Kevin Richard, was the son of a flower decorator and a resident of Domlur Layout. He was crossing the road when the car mowed him down, the police said.
The accused Ravi Teja A (30), an oncology surgeon, stopped his car to help the victim. He tried performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Kevin after which he took him in his car to Manipal Hospital. But by then, Kevin was declared brought dead at the hospital, said the police.
According to the police, the accident happened at 12.35 am in front of Kanakadasa Park on the Old Airport Road beneath the Domlur flyover. Dr Ravi Teja was on his way home in Murugeshpalaya from Shanthinagar after partying where he consumed alcohol, according to the police.
Kevin and two of his friends had come from a flower market in Marathahalli and were crossing the road near the first ramp of Domlur flyover on 17th Main which goes towards Indiranagar.
The speeding car knocked down Kevin and the impact was so severe that the bonnet of the car was dented and the windshield was broken with his head hitting it. The victim was tossed up in the air before he landed on the road sustaining grievous head and trunk injuries.
The doctor pulled over his car to the side and checked on the victim. He told the victim’s two friends that he was also a doctor and that he could help after which he tried calling the ambulance (108) and the police on 100, said the police.
Meanwhile, one of Kevin’s friends, Santhosh Kumar informed the police who rushed to the spot, but by then the doctor had taken the victim to the hospital.
The Halasuru traffic police who reached Manipal Hospital, found Dr Ravi Teja reeking with alcohol. They questioned him and found out he was drunk. He was immediately taken for a blood alcohol test at the same hospital which confirmed the doctor’s blood alcohol level was 113 mg/dL, much above permissible limits.
The doctor was then booked under IPC section 304 — culpable homicide not amounting to murder along with rash driving. He was then arrested, produced before a magistrate on Monday noon and was remanded in judicial custody.
The police have seized the BMW car bearing registration number KA51-MF-6891. Kevin’s body was subjected to post-mortem at Bowring Hospital after which it was handed over to his family.
Dr Ravi Teja is a native of Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh and works as an oncology surgeon at the Manipal Hospital. He had done his MBBS at Kolar and pursued Master of Surgery (MS) at Vydhehi Hospital, the police said.
