A police inspector and two of his subordinates attached to the Kodigehalli police station were suspended on Wednesday over charges of dereliction of duty.
Police commissioner T Suneel Kumar suspended inspector Rajanna, assistant sub-inspector Rajanna and constable Jairam for delay in registering an FIR after a robbery. The 21-year-old who was stabbed by robbers died later.
Kala Krishnaswamy, DCP Northeast Division, told DH that the incident happened around 10 pm on August 19.
The victim, Chandrashekar, had travelled from Gauribiddanur to the city by bus in search of a job. He got down at Kodigehalli near Badrappa Layout and was waylaid by two bike-borne miscreants. They brandished a knife and asked Chandrashekar to part with his cash and mobile.
When Chandrashekar resisted, one of them stabbed him on the thigh and made away with his valuables. A few passersby rushed the victim to a private hospital, after which he was shifted to MS Ramaiah Hospital. The hospital registered a medico-legal case and informed the police. Though the Kodigehalli police were informed of the incident, they failed to register a robbery case even on Monday.
Chandrashekar succumbed to injuries around 3 pm on Monday after which the police registered an FIR.
“The incident had come to the knowledge of Kodigehalli police, but they failed to register an FIR in time, which amounts to dereliction of duty. The police personnel involved were suspended,” said Kala Krishnaswamy.
A departmental inquiry has also been initiated, said another senior police officer.
