The police shot a rowdy who attacked a constable in a bid to escape arrest at the Indian Christian cemetery on Bannerghatta Road on Saturday.
The accused, Vinod, has multiple criminal cases against him. He was on the run and was hiding in the cemetery. Acting on a tip-off, a police team, lead by Ashoknagar police inspector Shashidhara, went to arrest Vinod, but he attacked constable Nawaz Khan with a knife and tried to escape.
Shashidhara responded by firing in the air to warn Vinod and later shot him in the leg. Both Vinod and Khan were taken to Bowring Hospital, where they are recuperating.
The police said Vinod was released on bail a month-and-a-half ago, and stabbed two wall painters Charlie and Pinto for staring at him in Anepalya on May 14. The police registered two cases of attempt to murder against Vinod, who escaped and hid in the cemetery.
