After a long delay and public intervention, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will start the work on rejuvenating Kaggadasapura Lake in CV Raman Nagar.

The rejuvenation efforts will focus on bringing back the migratory birds and fish in the water and greenery around the lake shore.

Speaking to DH, B T Mohan Krishna, BBMP’s Chief Engineer, Lakes, said the rejuvenation of the lake had been estimated to cost Rs 8 crore. He stated that the works would include developing the lakebed of the 47-acre waterbody, implementing the sewage diversion drains, improving water quality, bund strengthening and pathway construction.

Kaggadasapura Lake has been a prey to regular discharge of sewage water that reduced it to a cesspool and resulted in frothing. It also turned into a garbage dumping spot since it has no fencing, prompting residents and lake enthusiasts to file a suit under the Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Act.

The development of the lake was stalled since 2019 due to many reasons. However, the high court declared that the lake’s rejuvenation can be continued so long as the rules under the act are followed.

Krishna said the development would not include man-made islands or erection of statues. In fact, the BBMP will do nothing more than rejuvenating the waterbody.
