The 54th Civil and Sessions Court has convicted a 22-year-old man to seven years' rigorous imprisonment and fined him of Rs 80,000 for raping a 17-year-old girl in 2014 on the pretext of marrying her.

The victim's parents had filed a complaint on December 2, 2014, at CK Achukattu against the accused, Kamanna, who is an autorickshaw driver. Kamanna was residing in Manjunath Colony, Banashankari II Stage, with his wife.

According to police, Kamanna had lied to the victim about his marital status. He told the minor that he loved her and wished to marry her. He then took her to another city where he raped her. On returning to Bengaluru, the victim informed her parents, following which they filed a police complaint. The police have booked Kamanna for rape and kidnap and under various sections of the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses) Act.

He was arrested and remanded in judicial custody for four months. He was released on bail on April 6, 2015. But he did not appear for the hearings, following which the court issued an arrest warrant against him on February 6, 2018. Subsequently, the court granted him bail and remanded him in judicial custody.

On Wednesday, judge M Lathakumari sentenced him to seven years' rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 80,000.
