The Whitefield police have registered an FIR against unknown people for felling a large tree on the side of the Whitefield main road last Saturday night.
Nitya Ramakrishna, a member of the citizens' group Whitefield Rising, filed a complaint after she noticed the broken stump of the 80-year-old tree during her morning walk.
Nitya first contacted the civic authorities, who were clueless about the tree.
The police took up a case under theft and under the Karnataka Forest Act.
They are checking CCTV footage to identify those responsible for the tree felling incident.
