The Karnataka High Court on Friday granted conditional bail to former mayor R Sampath Raj in connection with the East Bengaluru violence case.

Justice John Michael Cunha granted bail with conditions that the petitioner will have to cooperate in the trial, not tamper with evidence and not leave the city without obtaining prior permission from the trial court.

The court said the Central Crime Branch (CCB) can always move the court seeking cancellation of the bail in case the petitioner violates any of the conditions stipulated in the order.

Raj is an accused in the case of violence that erupted allegedly after a controversial Facebook post on August 11, 2020. The prosecution case is that Raj was involved in a conspiracy to set the house of local MLA Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy on fire.

In October, Raj was admitted to the hospital for Covid-19. Police said he went absconding after his discharge. The CCB police arrested him three weeks later.
