The relentless efforts by citizens have finally borne fruit as the road under Doddanekkundi flyover in East Bengaluru is being asphalted by the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA).
The Bengaluru Development Minister, G Parameshwara, had promised in July that the work on the road under the flyover, including the drainage and construction of footpaths on both sides, would be completed by September 15. Having missed several deadlines so far, the BDA now promises to complete the work in the next few days.
“It took time for the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to complete the shifting of its water and sewerage pipelines. We were waiting for it all these days. The road asphalting work is going on now. It will be completed in the next few days,” said a BDA official who did not wish to be named.
The flyover was recently opened to the public to ease the traffic flow at the junction. But the commuters travelling between Marathahalli and Mahadevapura need to take the service road which is in a poor condition due to the ongoing roadwork under the flyover.
During the recent short spells of rain, the road under the flyover was a nightmare for the commuters as it was inundated with water. “We had to wade through the water-logged road in our vehicles. We had brought it to the BDA's notice several times, but they said asphalting cannot be done during the rains,” said Vishal Pawar, a Doddanekundi resident.
As the work on asphalting the road begins from 11 am onwards and continues until the evening, the commuters struggle with traffic snarls. “As there is no other route for us we continue to use the service road,” said Karthik S, another resident.
