The claims of Riyaz, a DYFI leader, on social media of being a victim of police assault have gone viral on social media on Wednesday.
Photographs of his injury too have been circulating on social media.
In his Facebook post, Riyaz has said that he and his brother were returning home to Moodbidri on their two-wheeler after closing their bakery.
The police on night duty stopped them and sought documents. Riyaz produced his driving licence and promised to furnish vehicle documents, which were at home. by morning.
Riyaz has claimed in his post that the police began abusing his religion and derided him for looking like a terrorist. “When I objected to the word, the police assaulted me. They took me to Venoor police station and beat me,” he said.
The police, in turn, filed an FIR against the brothers, accusing them of assaulting the police and preventing them from discharging their duties.
The incident has sparked wide criticism on social media.
Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Dr B R Ravikanthe Gowda has said that the DYFI members had submitted a complaint on the alleged police atrocity and the Venoor police had filed a case against Riyaz and his brother for assaulting the police personnel.
“I have directed the Belthangady circle inspector to conduct and inquiry into the incident and submit a report. Action will be taken based on the report,” the SP added.
