Volunteers clear garbage in the Bunder area of Mangaluru as part of the fifth phase of Ramakrishna Mission Swacchata Abhiyan.

The eighth ‘Shramadaan’ of the fifth phase of Ramakrishna Mission Swacchata Abhiyan was carried out in Bunder area on Sunday.

The cleanliness drive was flagged off at Azizuddin Road by the local corporator Rameeza Nasir and DK Cooperative Union President Harish Achar.

Rameeza Nasir said: “Ramakrishna Mission has been successful in instilling cleanliness awareness in people’s minds through this campaign for the last four years.”

The cleanliness drive was carried out in Azizuddin Road, Kandathapalli Jumma Masjid and Car Street areas. Heaps of garbage were spotted in these areas and were ruining the beauty of the place.

Women volunteers swept the roadside clean. Footpaths were also cleaned. The ‘black spots’ were converted into ‘green spots’ by placing flower pots.

The students of Karnataka Polytechnic took up the cleaning on Udupi Highway. Swacch Soch seminars were held in connection with Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan in six different colleges.

Swacch Gram Abhiyan was carried out in 40 villages of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts with assistance from the zilla panchayats.

Aranthodu, Kalanja, Volamogaru, Bettampady, Aladangadi, Arji, Nallur, Sanoor, Durga, Mala, Mudradi, Kayarthdaka and other village gram panchayats carried out the Abhiyan.

With the cooperation of the gram panchayat, ‘Shramadan’ was carried out in Aivarnadu. The cleanliness drive was carried out from the main town till Sri Panchalingeshwar Temple. More than 300 volunteers participated in the drive.
