The mortal remains of Hazel Jyotsna Mathias (28), a nurse by profession who died in Saudi Arabia under mysterious circumstances, two months ago was laid to rest, at her native in Shirva in Udupi, on Friday evening.
The funeral prayer was offered at Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva and was attended by a large number of people. The visitors who gathered were all teary eyed when they had an opportunity to have a glance of Hazel. The authorities in Saudi Arabia had retained the mortal remains of the deceased nurse for over two months citing investigation in the beginning and later due to technical reasons. The family members in the bereaved family were inconsolable.
Hazel, who belonged to an orthodox catholic family worked at Al Miqua General Hospital in Abha, Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia. She died under mysterious circumstances on July 21.
Earlier the cause of the death was not told to the family members. Later, the investigating officers in Saudi Arabia told the family members that Hazel was mentally tortured by an ambulance driver of the same hospital and unable to bear the torture, she had committed suicide.
During the funeral prayer, Udupi Bishop Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo prayed for the eternal peace of Hazel’s soul. MLC Ivan D’Souza, Ashwin Mathias (husband of Hazel) Robert Quadras (father of Hazel), Helen Quadras (mother of Hazel) and others were present.
