Acting on a tip off, Mangalore Air customs nabbed a carrier of foreign currencies and seized currencies worth Rs 5.52 lakh from the Departure terminal of Mangalore International Airport (MIA) on Monday.

The accused was identified as Muzakkir Ahamed Faqui Ameda hailing from Honnavara in Uttara Kannada district. He was preparing to catch a flight to Dubai from Mangalore airport.

Customs officials said the accused was attempting to smuggle foreign currencies worth Rs 5,52,678 with denominations in Pound Sterling, Dollar and Kuwait Dinar. The currencies were found concealed in his inner garments kept in the baggage.

The foreign currencies were being smuggled without valid documents. The team, led by Deputy Commissioner, Customs Avinash Kiran Rongali and Superintendents Rakesh and Vikas, nabbed the accused.
