The cement sculptures of Mahatma Gandhi’s historic moments will come alive on the premises of Gandhi Bhavan, University of Mysore (UoM), Manasagangotri, on November 6.
To mark the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhi, Gandhi Bhavan, in association with Kannada and Culture department, Karnataka Shilpakala Academy and Rangayana, has organised a 15-day camp to sculpt the statues. As many as 33 artistes from all parts of the state are working on 27 sculptures.
The statues of Dandi March, sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi along with Rabindranath Tagore, 8-feet long statue of Gandhi spinning the charkha, 7-feet long statue of Mahatma Gandhi walking with Manuben and Abha and a 7-feet long statue of Mahatma Gandhi with a microscope will be the attractions at Gandhi Bhavan.
The 11-foot tall statue of Gandhi will be another attraction.
In a press conference, here, UoM Registrar R Rajanna, said, Minister for Higher Education G T Devegowda will unveil the statues.
“Karnataka Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi president Wooday P Krishna will be the chief guest, while UoM in-charge Vice-Chancellor Aisha M Shariff and MLA L Nagendra will attend. Kannada and Culture Director N R Vishukumar will deliver the valedictory address of the camp while Karnataka Shilpakala Academy Chairman Shilpi Ru Kalachar will deliver the keynote address,” he said.
Gandhi Bhavan Director M S Shekar said, the sculptures of Mahatma Gandhi depict the historic moments and the ascetic beauty of Gandhi’s life. The sculptures also exhibit the culture and represent the social and spiritual principles of Gandhi, he added.
Karnataka Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi vice-president G B Shivaraju said, the aim of the works is to spread Gandhi’s message among the people, particularly youths. Gandhian K T Veerappa was present.
