Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada District Sasikanth Senthil has banned the movement of heavy vehicles, including trucks, containers, ship cargo, long chassis heavy vehicles and heavy commercial vehicles on Charmadi Ghat.
Cars, jeeps, two-wheelers, Rajahamsa buses and other passenger buses, barring premiere buses, are permitted to ply.
After Shiradi Ghat and Sampaje Ghat were closed for vehicles, Charmadi Ghat was the only alternative route that connected Bengaluru to Dakshina Kannada district.
As the traffic is high on Charmadi Ghat, the movement of heavy vehicles may cause congestion on this stretch. In fact, a truck broke down at Curve 10 on Friday evening, resulting in a traffic pile-up on the stretch.
The deputy commissioner said continuous rain in the Ghat section is causing landslides at a few locations which are immediately being cleared by officials.
