In order to revive the heritage and culture of old Mangaluru, the Dakshina Kannada district administration will organise Karavali Utsav-2018, from December 21 to 30.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil said that a photography exhibition, expo of artefacts and a quiz on the culture and heritage of the land would be held as a part of the festival. A team from Q-Factory of Kerala will conduct the quiz that is open to all.

Additional DC Kumar said that a cultural procession would be held as part of the Utsav from Nehru Maidan to Karavali Utsav grounds in Mangaluru on December 21. The Utsav would be inaugurated by playback singer Guru Kiran. The procession would have over 80 tableaux.

As part of the Karavali Utsav, a Beach festival would be held at Panambur beach from December 28 to 30. The audition for cultural programmes for the beach festival would be held at Town Hall in Mangaluru on December 17. A live concert by music director Manikanth Kadri would be held on December 30 during the valedictory of beach festival.

He said that as part of the beach festival, beach volleyball, Aaharotsava (food festival) and dance would be held on December 28. On December 29, a demonstration of kite making, sand sculpture, Aharotsava, drum jam and a musical extravaganza would be held.

On December 30—Yoga (5 am), Udayaraga (6.30 am), Zumba dance workout (8 am), sand sculpture (10 am), surfing demonstration (10.30 am), stand up paddling (4 pm) and Manikanth Kadri live (6 pm) would be held.

Kumar said that Yuva Utsav, a platform for the youth to showcase their talent would be held on December 27. The audition for musical and dance performances would be held at the Town Hall on December 18.

The district administration would also organise sports competitions as a part of Karavali Utsav. DK district-level men and women open handball competition, DK, Udupi district-level boxing competition for differently abled, men and women and DK district level men and women open lagori competitions would be held at Karavali Maidan on December 28.

DK district level men and women open weightlifting competition will be held at Don Bosco Hall in Mangaluru on December 29.

To revive the glory of rivers and backwaters of Mangaluru, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil said that the district administration had proposed to organise a river festival in Nethravathi, Phalguni and Shambhavi rivers in the month of January.

“The government has in principle, approved the river festival. The district administration has sought Rs 30 lakh for the purpose,” he added.

Kayaking, rowing, ferrying and a food festival would be held as part of river festival. To promote the riverfront, the district administration had proposed setting up of 12 jetties from Kuloor bridge-Sulthan Bathery-Old Port area.
