In another case, Amith, 27, was attacked by miscreants in Malpe on Saturday.

He has been admitted into hospital with critical injuries and is reportedly under observation. Police are probing if there was any connection between the two crimes.

Amith, a resident of Kola, was resting on the sea shore on Saturday night with his friend Karthik. Around 12.30 am, an unidentified man approached Amith and assaulted him with a wooden log.

Guruvelu was found dead in a pool of blood on Sunday.

Sources in Udupi Circle Police, based on their preliminary investigation, suspected Guruvelu to have attacked Amith. Guruvelu reportedly entered into a fight with other fishermen on Saturday and had left Malpe harbour in the evening. The fishermen had described him as being mentally unstable.

A case has been registered under Section 302 of the IPC.
