A person named Umesh was washed away in the Tunga river, which is in spate following heavy rains in the region.

A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been pressed into service to carry out search and rescue operations, on Friday.

Umesh belongs to Holehaddu village, Sringeri taluk. As many as 24 NDRF personnel have set out in two life rafts to search for the unfortunate Umesh in the Nemmar region.

Udupi rain death

In another unfortunate rain accident, Dhanya (22), an M.Com student, died when a temple compound destabilised by heavy rains, fell on her.

This incident occurred in Ullur village near Baindur, in Udupi district on Friday. Dhanya died on the spot.

Though rains are lashing Udupi and Mangaluru districts and the rivers are in spate, schools remained open.

Karwar rainfall

Rainfall in Karwar, Uttara district, which began in the wee hours of Friday, has been intermittent since. The city has remained cloudy and is likely to receive heavy rainfall towards evening. The Meteorological Bureau forecast says that rains will continue to lash the region for the next two days.

Monsoon relents in Kodagu

Heavy rain that lashed Kodagu district in the last couple of days, has gradually lessened on Thursday night, allowing people to come out of their houses.

Schools in Madikeri and Somwarapet taluks opened on Friday. Schools in these two taluks had remained closed for the last two days.
