Minister for Minor Irrigation C S Puttaraju said there is no shortage of funds for projects taken under the Department of Minor Irrigation and they will be implemented by taking all those concerned into confidence.

Speaking at a review meeting in Mangaluru, he said, “The chief minister has directed to prepare projects after consulting the MLAs. The projects that aim at rejuvenation of groundwater level and help in farming will be taken up.”

He said that vented dam to check intrusion of salt water will be constructed across river Nethravathi between Padil and Jappinamogaru. After getting technical inputs, the project will be started, he added.

Minor irrigation Executive Engineer Gokul Das said that the district has 291 vented dams. There is no shortage of wooden planks to close the vented dam to store water. The new model of planks have been installed, he stated.

District In-charge Minister U T Khader was present. While chairing a meeting in Udupi, Minister Puttaraju said that a vented dam-cum-barrage will be constructed by the department to facilitate the movement of light vehicles.

During the flood, twigs and weeds come in the way of the easy flow of water in the vented dams. To clear such twigs and weeds, each assembly constituency will be given Rs 20 lakh. The wooden planks that are installed to store water in the vented dams and check dams do not last long. Hence, the department is mulling over the installation of planks on the model of Maharashtra and Telangana, he explained.

He said there is a need to take up the work to check dams to check intrusion of salt water.
