Officers told to instal signboards in city

Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Mayor Bhaskar K on Tuesday directed the officials to initiate measures to install signboards in different parts of the city within a week.

Addressing the gathering at the monthly meeting on Tuesday, the mayor said the lack of signboards was causing lot of inconveniences to the visitors. Executive Engineer Linge Gowda said that by December end, the work of installations will begin. Traffic police and MCC officials have inspected the places to instal signboards.

The Mayor said, “We can not wait till December-end. The work should commence within a week.”

Earlier, Corporator Abdul Rauf said that the road widening has not helped to decongest the traffic as the vehicles are parked illegally beside the roads. Traffic police have failed to initiate action against illegal parking of vehicles.

Further, he said around 100 contract carriage buses enter State Bank area in Mangaluru. As per the DM notification, these buses cannot proceed beyond Pumpwell/Kankanady. “When the officials are asked for a bus to Bajal area, they speak of DM notification and permits are not issued for the last several years, how then do these contract carriage buses can enter the city” he said.

The mayor promised to convene a meeting with the traffic police within a week.

Rajendra and Kavitha Sanil said that the plants grown on the dividers should be trimmed. The Bougainvillea plants should be removed as it causes inconvenience for the pedestrians. Instead, flower bearing plants like Nandibattalu can be planted.

Corporators Sudheer Shetty complained that the authorities are letting the sewage into the storm-water drains at Dambel, Kodialbail, Ashoknagar, Kudroli. The wetwells at Padil and Bajal area are not functioning and the pumps have become defunct.

Corporator Deepak Poojary said that the progress of the second phase of the ADB funded projects should be informed in the council, to ensure that the mistakes committed in the first phase do not recur in the second phase.

When Corporator Appi said that unscientific UGD pipes have been laid at Kanakara Bettu in her ward, the Mayor said that he will inspect the spot to take a stock of the work.

Central market

Raising concern over decline playgrounds in the city, corporator Abdul Latheef said that temporary make-shift arrangements will be made at the football ground for the merchants of Central Market.

MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said a vacant land near football ground and the area earmarked for the street vendors will be used for providing temporary shelter for the Central market merchants, to facilitate the work on Central market.

The Emmekere ground will be developed under Smart City Mission and the land adjacent to Emmekere ground will be used for international swimming pool.
