The pending work on retaining wall and shoulders on the recently concreted Shiradi Ghat Road is nearing completion.

The restriction on heavy vehicles is likely to be lifted within two to three days.

According to National Highway officials, the pending works are almost complete. The work on shoulders has been completed. A protective temporary retaining wall has been constructed on the spot where the retaining wall had collapsed due to heavy rain. Report on the completion of pending works has been submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, who will decide on lifting the ban on heavy vehicles on the stretch.

Ocean Construction India Pvt Ltd Director Sharfuddin said, “The work on retaining walls from Kempuhole to Addahole is complete. The work on shoulders (on the side of the water body) is complete. About 4-km work on the shoulder on the other side is pending, which will be completed soon. A permanent retaining wall on the spot, could not be taken up due to continuous rainfall and flow of water. However, a temporary retaining wall has been constructed using sheets.”

The newly concreted Shiradi Ghat stretch was open for vehicular movement on July 15. As the work on shoulders, strengthening of shoulders and retaining walls were pending, the authorities restricted the movement of heavy vehicles on the stretch to facilitate the work.

Buses

Heavy vehicles including buses between Mangaluru-Bengaluru were using Madikeri-Mysuru road from January 20. On the other hand, the Charmadi Ghat road has also developed potholes. Heavy vehicles are waiting for the notification from Dakshina Kannada DC to use the Shiradi Ghat stretch.

According to Additional DC Kumar, “Deputy Commissioner is likely to issue a notification on the movement of heavy vehicles on the stretch by Wednesday. If the notification is issued, then the vehicles will be allowed from Thursday.”
