Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Dr Satyapal Singh said that the newly framed education policy will incorporate happiness-based education system.

“Happiness-based education system was the base for ancient Indian education system,” he said, delivering the 26th Leadership Lecture series at a programme organised by the T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI).

The Union minister said that the draft for the education policy had been finalised. The new policy would make an attempt to reduce pressure on students.

‘Burdensome system’

“The present education system is burdensome and forces students to take extreme steps including committing suicide. Instead, happiness should be the index and priority,” the minister stressed and added that the education system should not be merely career-oriented but aim at ultimate happiness in life.

The minister cautioned students against having a split personality as it is harmful and ends with suicide.

He said that if one aspires to be a leader, he or she needs to imbibe discipline. In all management institutions, the art of management of life should be taught to students.

7 Cs

Singh, who is a former IPS officer, elaborated on the 7 Cs that he considered crucial to achieve success in life: cosmic consciousness, confidence, commitment to shine, contribute to society, communication, conducted, connectivity and collective responsibilities.

During the interaction session, the minister shot back at a student that competence should not be decided based on marks.

“A man who has no formal degree will also prove to be competent if given an opportunity. Parents should realise early on and let their children decide what is important in life and what gives them happiness. Today is an era wherein all streams of education are important, however, the mindset of parents remains the same,” said the minister.

He urged students to enjoy life not at the cost of health, life and image of the family and institution.
