Demanding housing facilities, the members of the United Plantation Workers’ Union Suntikoppa hobli unit staged a protest in front of Madapura Gram Panchayat on Monday.

Hundreds of labourers have lost their houses in the natural calamity that hit the district for the last two years. No suitable arrangements have been provided to the flood and rain victims. The farm labourers working in estates do not have shelter, said the protesters.

The labourers have been submitting applications seeking sites for the last several years. However, no steps have been taken in this regard, said Union district committee president H M Somappa.

A memorandum urging authorities to provide houses for all shelterless was submitted to Taluk Panchayat EO Jayanna on the occasion.

The EO, in turn, promised to send the memorandum to the deputy commissioner and discuss the issue with her.
