Philatelists in and around Mangaluru will surely be delighted, for India Post has released a special cover depicting the Rosario Cathedral and an ornamental cancellation featuring ‘Rosary year’ emblem.
The attractive cover was released by India Post at a symbolic church celebration on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the cathedral. The cover has a splendid picture of the ‘Holy Rosary Cathedral’ a historical landmark of the city whose history goes back 450 years (1568-2018).
The cathedral, as it is seen in its present form, exists from 1915. A church has existed in this very same spot after the British established it’s trading base from 1800 AD and earmarked this spot for the Catholic Church.
The first ‘Rosario Church’ was set up by the Portuguese, not far from the South West corner of the Mangaladevi temple from which ‘Mangaluru’ derives its name.
The special cover is available for Rs 20 at the philatelic counter at the Head Post Office in Pandeshwar, stated a press release.
