State lawyers to support BCI's nationwide protest

The Karnataka State Bar Council and The Advocates' Association, Bangalore, have expressed their solidarity with the nationwide agitation called by the Bar Council of India (BCI) on Tuesday.

The advocates from across the state will abstain from all court proceedings today (Tuesday).

The BCI has called for nationwide lawyers' protest rally on Tuesday, condemning the inaction of the government in fulfilling the demands put forth by the legal fraternity. Over 1.7 million lawyers across the country will hit the roads on Tuesday to protest against the Union government's indifference towards the needs of the Lawyers.

In Bengaluru, advocates will take out a protest march from the Civil Court Complex to Raj Bhavan via KR Circle and High Court. The agitating advocates will submit a memorandum to the Union government through the governor.

Some of the demands put forth by the BCI includes an allocation of Rs 5,000 crore in the Union budget for the welfare of the lawyers and the litigants, a stipend of Rs 10,000 per month for young lawyers during first five years of their practice, adequate facilities for the members of the Bar, insurance cover up to Rs 20 lakh for lawyers and their dependents and enactment of Advocates Protection Act among others.
