Davangere: Six persons, including two police constables, sustained injuries after miscreants allegedly hurled stones at a Ganesha idol immersion procession in the city on Thursday.

According to police, constables Raghu and Annapoorna and four others sustained injuries in the incident.

Earlier, Hindu youths raised slogans in favour of Lord Rama when the procession arrived at the Chamarajapete circle.

Another group of youth raised slogans in favour of Islam and this led to a verbal clash between the two groups.

Meanwhile, some miscreants hurled stones at the procession.

Superintendent of Police Uma Prashanth, who was on at the spot, caned the mob to bring the situation under control.

The Hindu outfit members demanded the police to initiate action against those who hurled stones at the procession. Police personnel were deployed in the area to prevent untoward incidents and business establishments were closed down.
