Residents of Udupi town have to wait for another three to four days to get water supply from Baje reservoir.
Though the CMC officials had said that dredging had begun from Sunday morning itself, the actual dredging work started from Monday evening.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari told DH that the work had been taken up to accumulate water from the surrounding small ponds into a single huge pond, so that it would help to lift water using the pump.
In order to lift the water at Baje reservoir, the water should be stored to the level of 1.7 metres. Currently, the water-level is 1.2 metres. Hence, there is a need to increase the level of water by taking up dredging work. The work on removing the silt will be taken up from Monday evening, she added.
‘’In the last two days, the work was taken up to store water in a huge pond by diverting water from small ponds situated amid boulders in the dam.”
She said the city municipal council was hopeful of resuming the water supply in two to three days.
Meanwhile MLA Raghupathi Bhat said the dredging work should have been taken up long ago.
“The district administration has behaved irresponsibly,” he alleged.
