Waqf row: Karnataka Brahmana Mahasabha demands return of Inam land to temples

Davangere: The Akhila Karnataka Brahmana Mahasabha president Ashok Harnahalli has demanded that the government should return around 8,000 acres of ‘Inam’ land (land that was given to people and institutions by former rulers for various purposes) that were taken over from temples and priests.

Addressing media persons here on Saturday, Harnahalli said, "The kings had granted Inam land to temples and priests. The government took over the land belonging to Hindu religious institutions but did not touch the properties of the Waqf Board. While the government is keen on protecting Waqf land, it is not showing any concern for the Hindu temples,” he said.

'"The autonomy given to the Waqf Board has not been extended to the Muzrai Department. The revenue from ‘A’ grade temples goes to the government, but the money is not used for activities related to Hinduism. Temples are subjected to rules that are not imposed on churches and mosques. Hindu temples also need to be given autonomy," he said.
