Aimed at raising hygiene levels on trains, the Indian Railways has started an independent cleanliness survey of important trains running across the country. The trains will be ranked based on the survey.

An official with the railways said about 200 important trains will come under the survey, including Shatabdi, Rajdhani, Duronto, Samparka Kranti and Jan Shatabdi.

The survey covers cleanliness of linen, toilets, pantry, performance of onboard housekeeping and equipment used to maintain hygiene.

The move comes after several passengers complained about the hygiene level on trains, including the premier ones. The railways had recently released a cleanliness ranking of railway stations.

The official said systems such as rankings and surveys have been put in place to motivate railway staff to raise the level of hygiene.
