Essence of religious traditions

Different spiritual and religious traditions in the world have different goals set for their followers. Each tradition has its own set of unique features. There are some commonalities and some differences. But before we deal with that subject, consider the goals in some of the major traditions in the world. The object of human existence in Sanatana Dharma is self-realisation or to know one’s real identity through personal experience. Like Judaism, Hinduism has no founder but has a long and rich history of saints and spiritual masters. Unlike the Abrahamic religions, strictly speaking, it has no provision for conversion.

The goal in Buddhism is to achieve nirvana or enlightenment — cessation of suffering by liberating oneself from the endless cycles of birth and death.

Buddha prescribed the eight-fold path and strongly espoused the virtue of moderation. The goal in Islam is to reach paradise through the practice of codes of conduct prescribed in the scriptures. Islam means submission to the will of Allah.

The goal in Christianity is salvation by following the injunctions contained in the scriptures. The goal is Judaism is also salvation by following the commandments of prophets.

The goal is defined differently in each path. In India we have been fortunate to have spiritual masters who have helped people to stay connected with their higher energies. Their teachings form a treasure trove that helps a spiritual aspirant gain insights into their lives.

The different religious traditions of the world can be likened to the multiple routes that provide access to a city. For example, Bengaluru can be approached through multiple directions including north, south, east and west. The same is true of New Delhi, Calcutta, or Mumbai.

The routes are many but the destination is the same. In a similar vein, there are many routes to the almighty but the Supreme Being is only one. He is known by many names but he is only one. Spirituality is a deep mystery. Persistence is needed to grasp its essence.
