India's lesser-known freedom fighters who vanished from the pages of history - In Pics

Here we take a look at some of the eminent freedom fighters who fought equally hard but never got any share of the limelight in Indian history.

Alluri Sitarama Raju was an Indian revolutionary who led the Rampa Rebellion of 1922–24. He fought in the border areas of the East Godavari and Visakhapatnam against the British Raj. Credit: PIB

Kumaran from Tiruppur was a freedom fighter who actively participated in the India’s independence movement. He suffered serious injuries during a clash with the police while staging a protest in January 1932 and later died. Kumaran was holding the flag of the Indian nationalists flag at the time of his death and is remembered as ‘Kodi Kaatha Kumaran’ for his valiant act. Credit: Wikipedia

Social reformer and freedom activist Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay is known for her contribution to the Indian independence movement. She is the first women ever in Indian history to run for a legislative seat and was also the first Indian woman to be arrested by the British. Credit: PIB

Aruna Asaf Ali was an Indian independence activist and is widely remembered for hoisting the Indian National flag at the Gowalia Tank maidan in Bombay during the Quit India Movement in 1942. She also held the position of Mayor in Delhi post-Independence. Credit: INC

World War II veteran Lakshmi Sahgal was an Indian National Army officer. Sahgal was given Minister of Women's Affairs in the Azad Hind government. Rani Gaindinliu, a Naga spiritual and political leader, led a revolt against British rule in India. She was arrested at the age of 16 and was sentenced to life imprisonment by the British government.
