The INC candidate defeated BJP candidate D K Sidram by a margin of 21438 votes.</p>.<p>In 2018, Bhalki constituency had 224708 electors, including 117884 males and 106815 females.</p>.<p>The constituency had 9 third gender voters in 2018.</p>.<p>After the 2018 polls, JD(S) and Congress formed a coalition government with H D Kumaraswamy as the Chief Minister.</p>.<p>However, the coalition government collapsed in 2019 following resignations of 13 rebel Congress and JD(S) MLAs. The BJP subsequently formed a government with B S Yediyurappa becoming the Chief Minister.</p>.<p>In 2021, the BJP strongman resigned from the CM's post after which Basavaraj Bommai became the CM. </p>
