<p>Barely five days after he was removed as Madhya Pradesh director general of police (DGP), Rishi Kumar Shukla has been appointed as new CBI director on Saturday.</p>.<p>The 1983 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer is presently chairman of the MP Police Housing Corporation. He had served on this post earlier too. An engineering graduate, he became IPS at the age of 23. He has also worked in the Intelligence Bureau.</p>.<p>A native of Gwalior, Shukla was appointed DGP in July 2016. He had taken charge as DGP while intense lobbying was on in the state for the post. Shivraj Singh Chouhan called the IPS officer to his bungalow and asked him to take up the responsibility. Shukla’s father-in-law R P Sharma was also DGP of the state in early 90s.</p>.<p>Shukla, who was earlier Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), intelligence, from 2009 to 2012, has the reputation of a clean and upright police officer. However, the Congress targeted the then DGP many times for alleged inability to withstand political pressure in criminal cases against persons associated with the BJP. But he never faced any allegations of corruption.</p>.<p>Although he was former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s close confidante, the CBI director-designate assiduously avoided being dragged in any political controversy.</p>.<p>He is known to be soft-spoken and low-profile officer who worked hard to introduce information technology in policing.</p>.<p>Two months before the recent assembly election in the state, Shukla proceeded on six-week leave after he was detected with a cardiac problem.</p>.<p>He underwent treatment at Mumbai.
