Kota student suicide, leaves behind a heart-rending note

Jaipur: On a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was delivering his annual ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’ lecture to students, urging them to leave stress behind, Kota - the country’s coaching hub, witnessed another suicide by a 18-year-old, who left a heart-rending note to her parents claiming that she was sorry for not being capable enough to clear JEE.

The student was preparing for one of India's toughest exams - JEE and was scheduled to sit for it on January 30. Even though she stayed with her family in Kota’s Shastri Nagar area, she seemed to be under stress, say her relatives.

After her father, who is a gunman in a bank, left for his duty, she was locked in her room, studying. As she studied for more than 7 to 8 hours a day, her family members did not suspect anything unusual. Around 10 am in the morning, when her grandmother went to call her, she did not respond and was later found hanging from the ceiling. She was taken to the hospital but was declared dead.

She left a note to her parents saying 'sorry' and that she would not be able to clear JEE and she is a 'loser' and 'a worst daughter'.

Although a bright student, she did not fare well in her board exams last year and was also preparing to take the Boards a second time. She was the eldest of three sister.

This is the second suicide in Kota this week. Another student, Mohammad Zaid, 19, from Muradabad, UP, preparing for NEET had committed suicide on Jan 23.

Last year, Kota witnessed 26 student suicides. The Gehlot regime had brought out stringent guidelines to be followed by coaching institutes, including giving a day off and putting off exams to reduce stress amongst students. Around two lakh students from across the country are enrolled in Kota’s coaching institutes to crack India’s toughest entrance exams of JEE and NEET.
