Three including doctor held for raping nurse in Uttar Pradesh private clinic

Lucknow: Close on the heels of the rape and murder of a nurse in the neighbouring Uttarakhand, a nurse, who hailed from the Dalit community, was allegedly raped by a doctor inside a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district, about 350 kilometres from here.

According to the police sources here on Monday, three persons, including the main accused, identified as Shahnawaz, were arrested. The district health authorities sealed the hospital after cancelling its license, sources said.

Police said that the victim, who worked as a nurse at the hospital in Thakurdwara area in the district, was on night duty on Saturday, when Dr Shahnawaz summoned her to his cabin where she was allegedly raped around midnight. 

The victim, in a complaint lodged with the police, said that she had refused to go to the doctor’s cabin but was taken there forcibly by two other employees of the hospital, identified as Mehnaz, a nurse, and Junaid, a ward boy.

She said that Mehnaz and Junaid locked the doctor’s cabin from outside and left. The victim kept shouting for help but none came to her rescue. The victim’s cell phone was also taken away by the duo.

The two were also arrested.

Police said that the accused threatened the victim with dire consequences if she approached the police and also offered her money to keep silent. The victim, however, narrated the incident to her parents, who lodged a complaint on Sunday.

Police said that a case was lodged in this regard and all the three accused persons were sent to jail. 

Barely a few days back, the police in the neighbouring Uttarakhand state recovered the body of a nurse who was allegedly killed after being raped. The body was found in the Bilaspur area in UP. The accused was arrested from Jodhpur in Rajasthan.
